death-annieJean Grey was born and raised in Annadale-on-Hudson. Her parents were John and Elaine Grey and she was one of two daughters (the other being Sara Grey). Jean Grey was a normal child until the death of her best friend Annie Richards. While playing with Jean Annie was hit by a car and as her friend lay dying in her arms, Jeans latent telepathic powers awoke. She felt Annie dying and slowly slipping away from her. This incident left Jean deeply depressed, so her parents decided to seek advice from Charles Xavier. With his help Charles suppressed Jean’s growing telepathic powers and decided to focus on developing her budding telekinetic abilities.

As a teenager, Jean left her parents to join the X-men under the alias Marvel Girl. With the X-men Jean battled some of their most terrifying foes like Magneto, Juggernaut and the Sentinels. Jean even fell in love with her fellow team-mate Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops.

However on one of the X-men’s missions to an island called Krakoa Jean and several other X-men were held captive by the living island. With this predicament Xavier creates a new team of X-men to save the senior members of the team. Following her rescue from Krakoa, Jean decides to leave the X-men.

When the X-men’s space shuttle is caught in a cosmic storm Jean is the only one present who can both pilot the ship and shield it from the deadly radiation. Absorbing piloting information from Dr. Corbeau’s mind and shielding the ship from the radiation with her telekinetic powers, she landed the ship in Jamaica Bay. Everyone emerged from the wreckage except for Jean who was thought to have perished whilst guiding the ship to Earth. Suddenly the water started to bubble and an empowered Jean Grey rose from the murky waters declaring “ Hear me X-men! No longer am I the woman you once knew! I am fire and life incarnate! Now and forever - I AM PHOENIX! ” .

Jean once again joined the X-men under the codename Phoenix but was destined to fall from grace as the Dark Phoenix.

Jean spent many months with the X-men as Phoenix but was soon manipulated by a man called Jason Wyngarde ( Mastermind ) into joining the Hellfire Club. Jean soon loses control of her emotions and her incredible powers and becomes the Dark Phoenix! After defeating the X-men and consuming an entire planet Jean challenges her former mentor Professor Xavier to a mental battle. Professor Xavier defeats her and with his victory, restores her humanity. Jean however, turns into the Dark Phoenix once more and commits suicide on the moon. Jean emerged from the cocoon attacking the Avengers and the Fantastic Four but was soon apprehended by Susan Storm a.k.a. the Invisible Woman. It was soon revealed that Phoenix had stolen Jeans identity and that the original Jean Grey had remained in the cocoon at the bottom of Jamaica Bay, healing from the vast amount of radiation she had received while piloting the space shuttle to Earth many years previous. Jean soon joined the original X-men members in forming a new team, X-factor but would eventually return to the X-men again.

Scott and Emma soon began a telepathic affair which Jean eventually found out about. Scott briefly left the X-men after his affair with Emma was found out about and Magneto resurfaced once more but this time under the guise of one of the X-men’s own, Xorn. Jean was killed by Magneto and died in the arms of Scott Summers. Jean’s last words to Scott were to live and to move on with his life. Scott became leader of the X-men again and started a new relationship with Emma Frost.
