Is Scott Summers the Worst Comic Book Husband?

August 23, 2008 · Filed Under Questions & Answers, Rants

Cyclops, AKA Scott Summers

Married To:

Jean Grey, AKA Phoenix

Good Qualities:

We won’t lie, Cyclops seems to have the whole package: He’s polite, clean-cut, great with kids, and ridiculously muscular. That’s like winning the husband lottery, right?

Warning Signs:

Wrong. While Cyke might be the go-to guy for fighting colossal robots, you’ve got the wrong man if you’re looking for someone to have a good time with. Summers is a little like the Hulk, only instead of transforming into a rampaging monster, he turns into sort of a jerk. And never changes back.

He’s the only man alive who can make beating the tar out of a gang of genetic freaks feel like work.

The Clincher:

The worst thing Cyclops ever did to his wife might not be the most heinous on this list, but it is without a doubt the dumbest. See, Cyclops was married to Jean Grey who, by the way, had psychic powers. When some of the spark went out of the relationship, Cyclops dealt with according to the true nature of his jerkishness: by seeking sexual healing from another telepathic babe, Emma Frost.

Emma Frost

Thus they being a bizarre “psychic love affair.” After all, how would Jean ever find out? Oh, wait. She’s also psychic. To reiterate: Scott Summers, while married to a psychic of inestimable power, enters into a psychic affair with the sluttiest psychic in town.

Once Jean catches on, it predictably takes her about a thousandth of a second to tear into Emma’s mind and break up the shenanigans, leading to this charming tableau:

Look at Cyclops’ face in the above picture. It betrays one of two things: Either he’s only just realized what a titanically poor decision he’s just made, or he’s still in the dark and is completely flabbergasted. “What’s wrong, honey? Why are you so angry? Oh, say hi to Emma, you know Emma, right?”

you’re so right that was the most stupid decision Scott ever made!

That last bit is completely out of context…

    He was tricked, obviously.

Scott is just all around uptight.
Jean is better off without him.

Yes! He’s so stupid to think that he won’t get caught! Wasn’t he there when Jean exhibited her Phoenix powers?? And then he has the guts to say that the affair is not real anyway because they’re only thoughts?? He said that to the most powerful psychic in the world? That’s insulting, you idiot.

Thanks for writing this post so I can rant about Scooter. I used to like him but now…

Sadly, in the last few years Marvel has decided that writing about “good guys” is boring. Instead of focusing on more bad-ass characters or creating new ones, they’ve decided to villinize formerly good guys and thus have completely destroyed what made X-Men unique and interesting.

Evil Scott–the pro-murder, rude, cheating jerk he is now–is the most ridiculous creation they’ve come up with, except maybe for ego-maniacal Xavier. They’re not the X-Men I knew and loved. They’re just…jerks.

Michru, you are right on target. Marvel writers made Scott a terrible husband, ruthless leader and much less interesting. Remember when he was always holding wolverine back? Well, not any more, the X-men as a group are more ruthless and far more boring. Scott’s transformation into such a flawed character only inspires me to quite reading his comics, which I have.

cyclops and jean are honestly tied for my favorite super heroes of all time, and i’m really upset that he did this. i blame that apocalypse merge…next time jean comes back this will all be resolved. scott and jean have to be together…

Jean has such a pure heart despite the Phoenix Force’s influence because later she revived Emma (she had broken into pieces while in diamond form), which I would never do. I would’ve taken her head and hide it next to the M-Kran (sp?) Crystal in the heart of the Sun >_>

I am definetely with u guys on this one. First off he cheats on his psychic wife with a woman that tried killing his wife years ago. k… Scott if u don’t want to touch your wife.. um.. why is Emma dressed as Phoenix and with red hair. Why if u were having an affair..so called psychic affair did the x-men not notice. We do see Xorn and wolverine asking if u were okay. But it seemed you were going to sleep. Literally.(plus it does not make sense to me how he was flying and thinking of doing with emma at the same time, i know it’s a comic. But c’mon!) Were u not having fun? But when the cuckoos see Emma. Well her facial expression is a lil different. This is one of the reasons to me this psychic affair is bs. I mean it is obvious when a guy is um.. u know. As far as marriage counseling goes…jean needed to be present too. Dumbass. It seems the apocalypse merge made you just plain dumb. U were so boring in new x-men and anorexic looking and u were the one who was pushing jean away? Then again all u guys looked terrible. Lol

its the bitch Emma that we should blame LOL for being abusive of the situation Scott and Jean is in and the writers for making a “terrible” conduct out of someone who is somehow close to perfect such as Scott.. I still hope though that Jean and Scott will prevail at the end of this Love Story..

Then again it must be the writers way so that the majority of Scott/Jean fans will hate Scott and support their (Marvel’s) most fave character of all time: Wolverine for his upcoming love team w/ Jean (just a plain speculation of main hehe)..
