Jean Grey’s Return

December 12, 2009 · Filed Under Jean in the News, Just Jean, Questions & Answers · 4 Comments

In February 2004 Jean Grey perished at the hands of Xorn, a man who looked like and had the same powers as Magneto, the Master of Magnetism.

Jean Grey Dies

In June 2005 Jean Grey was resurrected in a story called Phoenix Endsong which saw her being resurrected by the Phoenix Force once more. The Phoenix Force used Jean to take on a life of its own and buried Jean within the ice in the North Pole. The malevolent entity possessed Emma Frost and attacked the X-men. Suddenly Jean Grey rose from her icy grave and her and the Phoenix became one. She became the White Phoenix of the Crown and went to the White Hot Room to collect the missing pieces of the Phoenix Force.

cable_08_coverSince then it looks like 2010 will be the year of the Phoenix. In 2009 Rachel Grey lost her connection to the Echo of the Phoenix Force (a less powerful form of the Phoenix Force) and muttered the words, “please…not now…mom”.

On the island of Utopia the Stepford Cuckoos lost the fragments of the Phoenix Force which they had imprisoned in their diamond hearts during the Phoenix Warsong event. They are currently in a coma.

These two events suggest that Jean Grey is calling back all the fragments of the Phoenix Force in preparation for her next resurrection.

Emma Frost recently encountered a woman who resembled Jean Grey in her mind when she was attacked by Regan Wyngarde a.k.a. Lady Mastermind of the Sisterhood of Mutants. The woman freed Emma from Wyngarde’s psychic trap and disappeared.

messiahbaby-cable5Since the events of the Messiah Complex a girl with red hair and green eyes was born and was named the Mutant Messiah. She was taken to the future by her adoptive father Cable and is now a teenager who bares an uncanny resemblance to Jean Grey. The so called Mutant Messiah has also displayed twin phoenix raptors in her eyes.

All this evidence points to Jean Grey’s resurrection and with Second Coming (the return of the Mutant Messiah to the present) arriving in March, you have to admit that this title may be more than meets the eyes.

What Religion is Jean Grey?

Jean Grey is probably an Episcopalian. Her late brother was even an Episcopalian clergyman.

Jean Grey is a mutant who was one of the founding members of the X-Men, the most popular Marvel Comics superhero team. The character of Jean Grey was introduced in X-Men issue #1, published in 1963. The character was created by Jewish comic book writer Stan Lee and Jewish comic book artist Jack Kirby. Jean Grey originally went by the superhero codename “Marvel Girl.” She later adopted the codename “Phoenix,” after the Phoenix Force which endowed her with great power, but also caused her many problems. More than most of the other X-Men, Jean Grey has been known simply by her given birth name.

Jean Grey has always been portrayed as having come from an upper-middle class Protestant background. She was a student of Professor Charles Xavier’s even before he founded the X-Men, and her family seems to have known the Professor prior to that time. Although Scott Summers (a.k.a, Cyclops, Grey’s longtime boyfriend, who would eventually become her husband) became known as the “first X-Man,” it was actually Jean Grey who was Xavier’s first student. Jean Grey was with the X-Men from the time the team was formed.

Given the way Jean Grey has been portrayed throughout the years, with her somewhat patrician and religiously low-key New England family background, the character has come to be widely regarded as an Episcopalian, although it is not clear whether this denominational identification is “canonical” (i.e., officially established within the Marvel Universe continuity).

Jean Grey was shown praying with a Christian cross in one Classic X-Men backup story. When Jean Grey married long-time boyfriend Scott Summers, it was in a Protestant Christian ceremony held outdoors.

Jean Grey has dead on multiple occasions, and the various scenes depicting her funerals and gravestones appear to be Episcopalian more than anything else. Read more

Would Jean Grey be Happier with Scott or Logan?

September 5, 2008 · Filed Under Questions & Answers · 12 Comments

When I think of Scott and Jean I think of soul mates. Of course we must disregard the farce of the storyline being fed to us know with Scott and Emma (see my thought on Scott and Emma). When I think of Jean and Logan I think of an illicit and sordid affair. So obviously my loyalties lie with Scott, despite his uncharacteristic coupling with Emma.

But Jean has also been paired with Wolverine on more than a few occasions as writers try to force a square peg in a round hole, in my humble opinion. But I realize there are many fans of Logan that may disagree with me. So let me hear you – both sides.

What do other Jean Grey fans think? Who would you rather see Jean with ultimately?

Please leave your responses in the comments.

Is Jean Grey evil?

Dark PhoenixDepends on the writer, and the time period.

Originally, she was known as Marvel Girl, one of the founding members of the X-Men. When the 2nd line-up formed (Storm, Wolverine, Colossus) she and Cyclops took some time off…

After re-joining the X-Men, she sacrificed herself by piloting a space shuttle back to earth, even though the pilot’s seat was being buffeted by deadly radiation. What happened next is a little open to interpretation.

Originally they said that she bonded with an alien entity called the Phoenix force, which protected her from the radiation, and gave her new powers. She then called herself Phoenix, but eventually became Dark Phoenix, which was portrayed as an evil character. (The Hellfire Club also mind-controlled her and turned her into their “Black Queen” somewhere along the way)

Is Scott Summers the Worst Comic Book Husband?

August 23, 2008 · Filed Under Questions & Answers, Rants · 11 Comments

Cyclops, AKA Scott Summers

Married To:

Jean Grey, AKA Phoenix

Good Qualities:

We won’t lie, Cyclops seems to have the whole package: He’s polite, clean-cut, great with kids, and ridiculously muscular. That’s like winning the husband lottery, right?

Warning Signs:

Wrong. While Cyke might be the go-to guy for fighting colossal robots, you’ve got the wrong man if you’re looking for someone to have a good time with. Summers is a little like the Hulk, only instead of transforming into a rampaging monster, he turns into sort of a jerk. And never changes back.

Differences between Jean Grey, Psylocke, Professor X and Emma Frost?

August 23, 2008 · Filed Under Questions & Answers · 13 Comments

Here is an interesting question. What are the differences between the mutants Jean Grey, Psylocke, Professor X and Emma Frost. While the comic writers are often liberal in the powers each character possess there are some fundamental differences that should be noted.

If you have something to add, please make a comment below. Remember, everything has some subjectivity, so be nice.

Jean Grey

Jean Grey

Jean Grey is the most powerful. She is on her own a powerful omega level telepathy and telekinetic. However, in addition to this, she often plays host to the Phoenix force which increases her power to the cosmic level.
